A GPX animation turns the latitude and longitude points in a GPS track into a moving route video. The best results simplify noisy track data, identify meaningful waypoints and choose a map scale that keeps the full journey readable.
Direct GPX import is planned but is not included in the current build. Today, you can recreate the key route points manually or from a Google Maps link. This page explains the GPX-to-video workflow so the file is ready when import becomes available.
What is a GPX route animation?
GPX is an XML file format used by GPS devices and fitness or navigation apps. A file may contain a route, named waypoints, a recorded track, timestamps and elevation. GPX route animation uses those coordinates to draw movement across a map over time.
Prepare the GPX file before video
- Remove accidental points recorded before or after the trip.
- Join broken segments only when they belong to one real journey.
- Reduce extreme GPS drift around tunnels, buildings or pauses.
- Name the start, finish and the few waypoints viewers should notice.
- Keep a private backup of the original file.
Choose between exact movement and a story route
An exact GPX track is useful for a race, hike or ride where the shape matters. A story route is often better for travel video: it keeps the start, finish and significant turns while removing thousands of points that add no visible meaning.
If the final video will be watched on a phone, simplify more aggressively. A viewer should be able to identify the direction of travel without studying the map.
Match time data to the purpose
A recorded GPX track may include real timestamps. Real-time speed can be meaningful in an activity replay, but it can make a travel recap uneven. For storytelling, consider a normalized duration that gives important stops enough time and moves quickly through repetitive stretches.
Privacy check before a GPX route video
Recorded tracks can reveal a home address, hotel, daily routine or exact campsite. Trim sensitive starts and finishes before importing or sharing the route. Use a nearby public landmark when the precise point does not matter.
